Bruce -

"RS" 'USE TO' sell low cost devices.. but not any
more.. their lowest priced device now days is %49.99..

And yes I have tried three different cables that were
12' after using a 6' cable...

So went the 'OEM's site of the ATI 7000 chip set base
video card and sent them email and their reply was
'..we do not suggest that you use cables greater than
8' in legnth..'

A year ago I had about six of these devices and gave
them to a near by 'DAV' when I clean out my "PARTS
BOX's" thinking that I would never need them again...

I have done searches of the net and eBay and all the
devices that I have found are selling for %50 or
greater...

The difference in brightness is.. set your monitor to
say 80%... Now lower the setting down to 50%... the
colors are all correct.. but the whites are no longer
'white'
