Rather than lock you into one of my opinions, I'll lock you in to
another:
1) insert CD-ROM with source packages into cdrom drive
2) mount cd rom
3) cd source directory
4) ls -l | sort -n +4
5) pick something near the top of the list that you recognize as a
cool program.
6) unpack the source and look around.
It takes a bit of experience to tell how well an application is
put together, but the above steps should get you on your way :)
As further help, look for an application that has:
subdirectories
Makefile(s)
documentation
