I have a very similar scanner, the 1200S.  IF YOURS IS SCSI, it is
trivial to make work.  If it is parallel, first you have my
sympathies.  Secondly, you can make it work but I don't know how.

In any case, you will want the SANE package, which works as a plugin
for Gimp.  Your distro should have it.  If not, if memory serves, the
website is mostang.com (no, that is not a typo.)
