The scanner mgmt package is called SANE. I hate to bring bad news, but there
are VERY few parallel port scanners that are supported. It seems every
vendor uses a different, proprietary, protocol for their parallel port i/o,
none of which are publically documented.

Most SCSI scanners are supported. If you'd gotten the Umax 1220S, you'd be
all set.
