For any interested, this problem was due to the IDE WD hard
drive needing to be jumpered as the only drive on the controller.
The BIOS would see the drive jumpered as either Master or
Stand Alone. When I changed the drive to Stand Alone, Linux
would load off of the hard disk every time.
One big fat self directed DUH!!
