your question is sort of along the line of the thread 'default screen
for Xconfiguration'

what i think tom w suggested and what tom h did could answer this
question as well

at the bottom of the XF86Config file there's a section called "Screen"
this section will have a subsection called "Display"
the subsection Display will have a few lines -- a depth line, a modes
line and a view port line

your modes line might look something like:
   Modes "640x480" " 800x600" "1024x768"

so if you want the default to be 640x480 that's great . . . since it's
the first resolution
on the modesline that'll be the screen default -- that example would
give 2 other
possible resolutions thru ctrl+alt++

if your modes line looked like this:
  Modes "1024x768" " 800x600" "640x480"
1024x768 would be your default resolution and ctrl+alt++ would still
give 2 other
possible resolutions

tom h possibly used every modesline defined or something to get so many
resolution possibilities

good luck
