I program RPG for a living. It is a much more modern language now, than it was
even five years ago (we now have functions! WooHoo!)

I can show you the books and training stuff I used to learn. I can show you
what old style (what you will probably see) code looks like, and what new code
looks like. To really learn, you need access to the system you will code on.
The free compiler available is at RPG II level, and is not even fully
implemented. If the job is using this style, you probably don't want to get
involved. I can say from experience, the free compiler is nearly worthless for
what you are wanting. You need on the job training, or classes at one of the
two colleges in KS that still teach it.

As someone who programs RPG, I can say there are definite advantages and
many more disadvantages to doing it as a job--It really depends on how the
shop uses the language. If you want, I can show you at the next meeting what
you would be expected to work with, and what learning tools are available.

Bottom line: I bet I can scare you off, pretty quick.

Just my 2c. (sorry if this is a bit disorganized--I'm in a hurry)
