i was using linux before either one was heard of
(up hill, in the snow, both ways :-).

i boot to a text prompt.
i startx with the .xinitrx file loading my window manager and an extra Eterm.
currently my window manager is Xfce, but i also like afterstep, lesstif and the 
older
version of fvwm(great for old hardware).

i've never really understood why they were needed.
