I don't think anyone doubted that it was possible to use a Winmodem under
Linux, just that nobody was doing drivers for them. Apparently every
winmodem is different, so every one of those weird off-brand modems would
require a different driver and none (few now?) of the manufacturers were
even releasing the specs on the HW so someone could write a driver for it if
they wanted to.

The next question is "Why?", given that a winmodem bogs your machine down by
forcing more of the functionality off of the hardware into the (host)
software. No thanks, I'd rather have a real modem.
