Just going out on a limb here. Does the Intel architecture (which I'm
assuming) allow more than /dev/hdx8? IRC, hdx1-4 is the maximum number
of primary partitions allowed and hdx5-8 would be the four logical
partitions allowed in an extended partition. I'm also not quite sure,
but I think if a drive has up to hdx4, then an extended partition cannot
be created. I think it is a limitation of the partition table and the
BIOS.
It's been over two years since I played extensively with fdisk, and I
think I wanted five partitions on this IDE HD, but could only create
three primary and then the extended, if memory serves (and it probably
won't...).
