Thanks, John!

I also received a 56K crash course from Linux user in Australia!  He said
the same thing and added that I shouldn't necessarily worry about the
"connect" speed as the modems will speed up and slow down as the line
quality allows.  He told me that rather than pay attention to the "connect"
speed---download something and pay attention to the transfer rate for a more
accurate measurement of connection speed.
