Linux Vendor Makes Acquisition, Changes Name
Linux hardware vendor VA Research yesterday said it has
agreed to acquire its largest competitor, Linux Hardware
Systems.
VA, the leading supplier of build-to-order computers based on
the open source Linux operating system, also today said it has
agreed to acquire Enlightenment Solutions, a supplier of open
source graphical windowing software. Terms of the deals were
not disclosed.
Larry Augustin, VA's president and CEO, said that with the
new acquisitions the company will set up two separate
business units. The main company has been renamed VA Linux
Systems Inc.; a separate organization called VA Labs will
employ 25 as a research and development group, Augustin
said.
VA Labs will work on building systems based on Intel's IA-64
processor, code-named Merced. Intel recently made an equity
investment in VA. -- Jeffrey Schwartz
