Some advanced technology.... Most of the things in the description are
fairly easily done with just two modems (and phone lines) and a bit of
software. The problem I see is that unless your ISP supports load
balancing, you won't see any improvement in single file download
speeds... But I beleive that there is support for multiple serial load
balanced connections in linux...

If you are transfering multiple files (like when downloading web pages)
you could easily just send requests down multiple IP's (or connections)
and get some parallel transfers to take place... But your ISP will
have to be one that either does not care about or specifically allows
multiple connections. Most don't unless you pay for it, and some can
get quite upset (Netcom, Southwind etc) if they catch you doing it (and
are quite good at monitoring such things too.)

The bulk of the "features" they describe would have to be implemneted in
software....

One is actually the default behavior of modems and does not require any
special effort (Like having the "call waiting" tone drop the modem
connection.... It most likely will, and when the modem hangs up, you
will hear the phone ring. If they put a 60-90 second redial delay, you
or your answering machine will pick it up...) Such a feature!

The software behvaior could easily be done through the use of a
specialized slip device (like in diald) and some diald driven ppp
connections via seperate modems. Care would need to be taken to get the
routes set right and to make all traffic go through the proper
connections for load balancing, but it would not be hard to make it work
I'd bet.
