OK, the relevant question here is: does this problem always occur at
the same spot in the compilation (when compiling itimer) or does the
location vary?

If it always occurs at the same spot, there is a compiler bug.
However, I consider this to be highly unlikely.

Other more likely problems unfortunately are hardware-related.  Things 
such as overheating, bad memory, overclocked or bad CPU, bad cache
(internal or external), or dirty power could all cause this.  Most
frequently, I would say it is bad memory or overheating in the
computer.

There is a Sig11 FAQ out there someplace but I forget where.  You
might search for it.  If you can't find it, I can look for it sometime 
when I've got more time.
