I Carsten,

The implementation and meaning of the reference is server-dependant.
You didn't say what server you're using, but I'm guessing UW-imapd from
your description.

I would suggest using the folderfilter option, perhaps in conjunction
with reference, to insure that you are never going to try to sync with
mail outside of the expected folders.

UW-imapd does have the annoying "feature" in which it tries to serve up
every file in your home directory as a mail folder, whether or not it
really is.  Unfortunately, OfflineIMAP must take the list of folders the
server presents, and can't automatically know that .bashrc does not hold
mail :-)
