dots in maildir directories

have a containing structure similar to the top-level Maildir."

I'm using a dovecot imap server on the backup system, so in theory i 
could access all the "offline" email using imap. But dovecot insists 
that subfolder names should start with a dot... (this seems to be the 
default for dovecot and postfix when they create subfolders in maildir).

is there some trick to add those dots?
