I just scanned through the sources of Courier IMAP. It seems that it
lets you configure what separator character to use at compile time, with :
being the default, obviously. It seems that this was added specifically
to support Cygwin.

I concur with your worries about sleep.
I don't know what other software the others that have made this request
are using or want to use, but since making the separator character
configurable would presumably help at least me, I would be glad to see it.
