One of the more common free tools for this is nmap
        http://www.insecure.org/nmap/

If you are logged in to the system that you are wanting to check, you
might also try running "netstat -a". It will show you what TCP
connections currently exist and what ports are listen. I just resently
learned about the -p flag to netstat which shows what processes are
associated with each listening port.
