I recently purchased a couple 9gb SCSI hard drives... they're actually SCA
drives (with the 80-pin connectors). I've purchased the necessary
adaptors... I've plugged them in... and now I'm having problems.

I initially had an Advansys SCSI card... I've recently replaced it with a
Tekram UW SCSI card. The same problem happens with both cards.

All my other SCSI devices function properly... just these 9gb SCA drives I'm
having problems with.

Current setup:

$ cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00
Vendor: QUANTUM Model: VIKING 2.3 SCA Rev: 880R
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 02 Lun: 00
  Vendor: SONY Model: CD-ROM CDU625 Rev: 1.0r
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 03 Lun: 00
Vendor: TEAC Model: CD-R55S Rev: 1.0F
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 04 Lun: 00
  Vendor: TANDEM Model: 4585-3 * cs m# Rev: 03A0
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03

dmesg shows:

It shows that last part numerous times... that seems to be related to the
2.2gb Quantum drive... which, incidentally, seems to work anyway.

The symptoms I'm having are:

Both 9gb drives appear as:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 04 Lun: 00
  Vendor: TANDEM Model: 4585-3 * cs m# Rev: 03A0
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03

Vendor TANDEM?!? What's that? These are IBM drives...

And Model 4585-3 * cs m# ??? In the SCSI bios, there are many other
characters--where you see spaces there. They're all high-ascii characters.

When I attempt to mount /dev/sdb it says:
mount: /dev/sdb is not a valid block device

Which I guess makes some sense since previously dmesg said it removed sdb...

So now my question is: What's the problem? :-)

Both IBM drive behave identically, which would seem to me to indicate that
it's not a hardware problem with the drives... it'd be rare to get two
drives displaying these exact same problems.

I'd suspect a problem with the SCA -> SCSI-68 adaptor... but my 2.2gb drive
is an SCA drive, too, and the adaptors all work fine there.

I was able to do a low-level format of one of the 9gb drives from the SCSI
BIOS utility... although it had no effect on my ability to access the drive.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

and time again, and betrayed their trust. He is no longer an effective
leader. Since he has admitted guilt, there is no reason to put the American
people through an impeachment. He will serve absolutely no purpose in
finishing out his term, the only possible solution is for the president to
save some dignity and resign."
