Wish you were right, but unfortunately, it seems that they're
seriously thinking about completely removing the Gopher protocol
support. Please see
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388195 (not the bug about
proxy UI settings but the protocol itself, as a whole). Moreover, the
bug title has just been changed from "Consider removing gopher
protocol support for Firefox" to "Remove gopher protocol support for
Firefox". Several patches are already attached and the target is Gecko
1.9, which means Firefox 3.
