Hmm, I had never heard of AVFS before, but I'll take a look.

Everything mentioned in my e-mails is possible with gopher (aka
gopher0) alone.  So is the "mountable gopher filesystem" concept.

Gopher+ adds, basically: MIME types, modification date, multiple
views, multiple language support.  You don't need that for a
filesystem view.
