I investigated and found a RPM package upgrade that appeared to break 
the installed version of /usr/.local/bin/mimedefang, the spam filter.

Solved by completely upgrading Perl (without touching the existing two 
Perl installations), then fetching, configuring, compiling and 
installing the latest mimedefang distribtion into /usr/local/bin.

I can send tickets by e-mail again (tested: 17966).
