I've had this error too. It is the weirdest most possible error - some sort 
of compiler bug, I'm guessing. If you put a freelog in fz_from_file in 
utility/ioz.c, between is_reg_file_for_access and the switch statement, the 
error seems to go away, but only with -O2. I have absolutely no clue why 
this might be.

hi,
i compiled freeciv as a sdl-gui client on win32 using mingw, yet i get an
error when starting it, gdb output as following:

$ gdb civclient.exe
GNU gdb 5.2.1

welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain
conditions.

This GDB was configured as "i686-pc-mingw32"...(no debugging symbols
found)...
(gdb) run
Starting program: e:\freeciv/civclient.exe

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

(gdb) bt
