I also see that, before it occurs, there is approx. 0.5 seconds between the
mouse button release and the popup and icon disappear.

After first occurence, it happens as often as I click MMB, so there are
multiple icons with a limit of 20 or so, where the oldest are removed when
new ones come to appear.

gnome-panel-screenshot --delay=10
does the trick in Gnome.
