  I have not tested this version, but it seems to introduce some 
annoyance to development work. What happens if I don't define 
installation directory (i.e. BINDIR will get its default value), leave 
FREECIV_SERVER_BINARY unset and try to run 'gdb client/civclient'?

  Earlier patch for S2_0 seems ok to me.
