I found that the problem arises in ui_main where the call to
g_locale_to_utf8 fails. When I retrieve the error message, it reads:
Conversion from character set 'XXX' to 'UTF-8' is not supported.
(or a translation of that). Here XXX is whatever LANG or LC_ALL has been set
to. The problem seems to be that XXX should be substituted by the encoding.
So that seems to be a bug in some other place (glib?). Anyway, this error
situation should be handled properly in ui_main.
