ImageMagick is a pig, avoid it. I have tried to do the conversion with
netpbm, but I don't know anything about colour formats. E.g. are the
PNGs supposed to be in 256 colors?

If someone has a netpbm script to do the conversion I'd really
appreciate it if it is posted. netpbm also has a C library.
libpng doesn't have many dependencies so it isn't much of an extra
burden to install on antique systems (for which the Xaw client is
most useful).
