It looks like you have just created a new very complete class timer.
Markus patch was more C like. It adds the minimum code to solve the
problem. There are 2 styles of C programming : yours strongly influenced
by c++ and Markus' one efficient and more classical. If it can help, I can
add a little section in How to contribute explaining we use C but we
follow c++ style of programming.
