Ah.  The automake system assumes only "maintainers" have .deps,
and others are using (cathedralesque) releases where the deps
are folded into the makefiles.  So only "make maintainer-clean"
will remove the .deps (or eg "make maintainer-clean-depend"
in server/), but then that will do other stuff you probably 
don't want :-(
