1) To answer your question... read the Kernel-HOWTO.

2) Why are you using kernel 2.1 at all?  And how did you come to start using
it without knowing how to manually install a kernel?  Kernel 2.1 is a "beta"
kernel (and an old one at that) that was never used in production systems
(or at least never should have been)... so the only real way to get a 2.1
kernel on your system is to install it manually--as the Kernel-HOWTO
describes.
