Things are finally falling into place for me and Linux.
The SCSI scanner and zip drive work.
Gimp replaces Photoshop. Except the dodge tool needs work.
GQview shows my pictures better than the windows s/w I was using.
Gnumeric is about as good as Lotus 123R5.
Gphoto2 downloads from my camera.
Alsaplayer and cdplayer play the music.
I'm getting used to Kmail although it's tied too closely to konqueror which I
could do without.
Opera and Mozilla take care of browsing.
I can print text fast or beautiful photographs in color (slowly).
The big one was a word processor. I got used to wordperfect with windows,
but the version 8 for linux just won't load on RH7.2 Tried Abiword for a
while, but can't cut from a terminal and paste to Abiword. Tried Kword, but
it really sucks - insists on putting 5 mm space between paragraphs and
reformats things randomly including changing font sizes. Can't save a text
file to text without changing it greatly.
This week I found and downloaded Staroffice 5.2 and it has a very good word
processor. Has a good find and replace, cut, copy and paste work as they
should. Knows about fonts and italic and font size. Really what I was
looking for. If release 6 (at $75) is better, it should cut into microsoft's
office deeply.
Still work to be done.
Had a great OCR (optical character recognition) program in windows - haven't
heard of one for linux, but haven't looked yet.
Have mapping software in Windows that I can download to my GPS - may not see
this in Linux for a few years.
Still haven't tried to set up my ups PDA hookup - don't use it much, anyway.
Need to find a good front-end for gphoto2.
Still struggling, but getting closer,
bruce
