Southwestern Bell currently has 4 types of DSL users out there. For
the Basic Service, there are both standard DHCP users, and PPPoE users.
They
originally rolled the service out with just straight DHCP, and people
who
have had their account for a while got that. However, they had problems
with
people who were only supposed to be using one IP address doing exactly
what's
mentioned above, and using more IPs than they were supposed to, hence
causing
others to be unable to get an IP. Because of this, they started using
the
PPPoE system, which only allows one computer to get a connection to the
DSL
line, and any other computer the person wants to connect must be shared
throug
that one computer. However, rumour has it they've been having loads of
problems with the PPPoE system, and are going to be going back to
straight
DHCP at some point (perhaps already) soon for new connections, but they
will
be cracking down on people using multiple IPs when they've got the basic
service.

The other 2 types out there are those of us with the enhanced service,
who get 5 static IPs, and don't have to worry about DHCP or PPPoE, and
the
business DSL, which provides 29 static IPs, likewise without having to
worry
about DHCP or PPPoE. From my experience, the enhanced service is well
worth
it, because I've had many, many fewer problems than most of the other
people
I've talked to that have the basic service. But that's just my
experience.

I will suggest that if you want to keep up on the news about what
swbell is doing with their systems, since they don't like to actually
communicate anything to us, the customers, you read the swbell.adsl and
swbell.general newsgroups...if you can fight your way through the whines
about the cap on the news server speed, you can sometimes get decent
info
out of there.

                                                                JF
