[aclug-L] Addendum to tonight's meeting on Tar/Dump

I don't think I made one thing clear about the difference in using dump vs
tar/kdat/archiver of choice. Dump requires that you back up *complete file
systems*. That is a complete partition -- you do not get to choose which files
are backed up. Tar, cpio and others allow you to specify which
files/directories get backed up. This is an important distinction. When I
dumped the contents of my laptop to tape, I backed up things like my netscape
cache and other temporary files since there's no way to exclude them. When I
used Kdat, I was able to exclude them from archive, saving time and tape space.
I hope this clarifies things.
