Here's is what worked for me:

Make three partitions (at the least/varies with taste and religion ;):

5-10Meg '/boot' -on hda1
128Meg swap -on hda2
remainder '/' -on hda3

Now you can run LILO on either /boot, or the MBR with no problem.

I'm open to *real* solutions, but this worked for me on a 4.0Gig Hard
Drive (never had his problem before, though SuSE admitted a bug in the
initial 6.3 boxed sets!).
