ACLUG MEETING: MONDAY OCTOBER 25

Linux offers several different command shells, (similar to DOS's
command.com) the most popular of which is BASH. Tonight's meeting will
assist you in working at the BASH command prompt, explaining the meaning
of the various file attributes, how shell command aliases work, how job
control works, and giving examples of useful shell commands. 

Once you understand the shell, it becomes possible to write simple shell
scripts (think DOS batch files).  Many repetative tasks can be handled by
shell scripts.  A basic overview of BASH shell programming will presented,
with a question and answer time to follow.

Part One of tonight's meeting will be presented by Jeff Schaller.

Part Two of tonight's meeting will be presented by Tom Hull.   


After the Meeting, we will be offering to sign and exchange PGP keys.
Anyone wishing to participate should bring their key (ver 2.6x) on a DOS
formatted disk.


ACLUG MEETING: MONDAY NOVEMBER 8
--------------------------------

The X Windows system is Linux's (as well as Unix's) graphical interface.
Some distrubutions (such as Redhat) rely heavily on X windows to provide
easy, menu driven configuration tools.  Tonights presentation will help
you in configuring X Windows to take maximum advantage of your graphics
card. 

We will also be demostrating the various window managers that run under X,
for unlike MS Windows, X can run any of a number of window managers, each
of which offer a different look and feel.    
 
Tonights meeting will be presented by Tom Wallis and Clint Brubakken.


After the Meeting, we will be offering to sign and exchange PGP keys.   
Anyone wishing to participate should bring their key (ver 2.6x) on a DOS

LINUX NETWORKING  WORKSHOP SATURDAY OCTOBER 30
----------------------------------------------

This workshop is intended primarily for people with very little
experience networking Linux.  We will begin by discussing basic networking
concepts, and how the Internet works, then will move on to configuring
your very own Internet server for use at home or at the office.  We will
configure your machine as a web server and FTP server, as well as help you
log in to your machine remotely using telnet or ssh.  You will have the
opportunity to configure your computer as a gateway to the Internet for a
small or private LAN, as well as set up a mail server for other machines
on your network.

   It is assumed that you already have an Internet connection of some sort
from your ISP or place of work or school, whether it be a dialup modem
connecting using PPP, cablemodem, or a direct ethernet connection to your
work LAN.

 We will have a small LAN set up at the workshop, and you are welcome to
bring your own computer to the workshop to configure it there.  Other
highly-trained (but not necessarily in the area of computer networking),
unprofessional Linux experts will be on sight to help you as you have
questions.  If you intend to bring your computer to the workshop, be sure

participate in our bulk buying of  O'Reilly's "Learning Perl" need to

MEETING FORMAT REMINDER
-----------------------

One issue that has been somewhat troublesome is making presentations
interesting and useful for people with a wide range of Linux experiences. 
We want our meetings to be useful for as many people as possible, so our
plan is this: For those of you that are starting out with Linux, or just
interested in what Linux can do, please feel free to join us at 7:00 PM on
each meeting date (every other Monday starting August 30th).  We'll cover
some basics about the evening's topic or Linux in general, or  have an
informal Q&A time, depending on what the people present prefer. Also, 
if you have any Linux questions (beginning or advanced), we'd like to get to
them between 7 and 7:30 so that the evening doesn't get too late for those
that have to work or go to class in the morning.

Our regular presentation will begin at 7:30 as it always has.  Of course, if
you can make it at 7, you're encouraged to stay for the whole program.  You
are welcome to arrive at either 7 or 7:30.


LOCATION AND MAPS

 We will hold the this event in the Computer Science Department in
Jabara Hall on the main east campus of Wichita State University.
ACLUG has assembled some driving instructions on the Web at
http://www.aclug.org/maps/.  We will be located on the second floor of
Jabara Hall.  We expect to be in room 260, but we'll be sure to post
signs if we need to relocate elsewhere.  You'll be able to find a sign
on the wall in front of the 2nd floor elevator when you arrive.

Room 260 is almost directly in front of you as you exit the second-floor
elevator.

About the Air Capital Linux Users Group

ACLUG was created in early 1998 as a group to help people discover
better ways to take advantage of modern computing through the use of
Linux.  All ACLUG events are free; we have hosted two free Linux
