it is a sound driver for various cards (more than the kernel natively
supports)

what type of ensoniq card? i am currently using
alsa-lib/driver/utils-0.3.0pre4 with my Ensoniq AudioPCI (es1370) card...
it works better than the kernel 2.2.x support for this card (IMHO), and is
solid as a rock...

if you have any specific, i'd be glad to help!
