The modem is linked to cua1 (I think that's what it was - I had most of one eye open at the time). I'm hoping that the modem is okay since it's so old. I don't think there was such a thing as a winmodem then.

Is there a built in diagnostic that will communicate

Is /dev/modem a link to the right device?

try sending
ATA
in minicom?

I think there's also a way to send raw modem commands to the device,
possibly 'echo ATA' > /dev/ttyS1; but I might be mistaken (never tried
it).
