[aclug-L] 2.2.2 kernel is different?

How can a novice tell that he (or she) installed the new kernel
correctly?

I look at the /lib/modules/ directory and it is very different from
2.0.36, for example there is no /misc directory.  Or is it that the
kernel did not correctly install?  How can I tell?
