 Maybe it is an older version of XFree86. I had to download
 XFree86 3.3.3.2 to support my video card chipset.

Or are the xterms doing something

  All the other window managers work just fine. So, I guess that rules out
  the X server and other configuraton files for any problems. I imagine it
has something to do with the Afterstep setup.
