Yes, it was...  Goes to show what happens when you have to ponder questions
when you can't work on your system.

The answer to my own question is yes.  You just have to point /dev/mouse at
the right com port (/dev/cua0) and set the protocol in XF86Config to
"Microsoft" instead of "PS/2".  Pretty easy!
