With the news of more office applications available on Linux, I questioned
the renowned foot dragging Lexmark and this is my correspondence with them.

Mr. Rose,
Currently our only inkjet printers that have Linux support are the Lexmark
3000,
the 1020 Business Edition (model 4078-001), the 4079 Plus and the NEW Optra
Color 40/45 with Postscript Level 2 or PCL 5 emulation. The WW150, 1020
(model
4078-002), 1000/1100, 2030, 2050, 2055, 2070, 3200, 5000, 5700, 7000, and
7200
are host based printers that were developed for Windows 3.1 and Windows
95/98.
We appreciate your comments and customer feedback helps in determining the
interest level of our Lexmark customers with the various operating systems.
Although we do not have a solution for you at this time, we will pass your
comments on to our marketing department. They are constantly evaluating our
product line and input such as yours is extremely valuable.

Dear Ms Babbitz,
I own a Lexmark Jetprinter 1000 ( I realize that this is not top of the
line ) and I would like to print using the Linux Operating system. (UNIX is
almost like Linux). I've found that Lexmark printers in general are not
useable with any UNIX system. In fact I've noticed many postings on usenet
news groups warning people to not purchase any Lexmark printer. As I
currently boot Windows98®, I can still use your printer but I will be
looking to buy another printer in 1999. What will it be?
I think that you should check out this link to a time line for 1998 and note
the inclusion of Star Office® and Corel®.
http://www.lwn.net/1998/1224/timeline.html
Thank you for reading this. I know that you would like to sell more Printers
than HP®. (With Linux, you could just release the source code for your
printer drivers and the users would write their own device driver.)
Have as prosperous a new year as you can!
Joe Rose
