Well, I guess I have to weigh in with my first impressions of WP8. I
like it! Kudos to Corel as it installed and prints without a hiccup or
complaint on my Slackware '96 based system.

Although I don't have any really large documents to throw at it, I did
open a 9 page document created in WP 5.1 for DOS and it formatted and
printed perfectly. I then tried a 340k document from the Federal
Communications Commission in WP 5.1 format and it opened, displayed
embedded graphics (Word 6.0 could NOT do this in this file) and printed
the page perfectly. I do think WP8 on Linux is noticably faster than
Word 6.0 was on this machine running in either Windows 3.11 or '95.

I did try to load a six page newsletter created by Word 6.0, but the
filter wasn't able to do the conversion. This was a document with
embedded .PCX and .BMP files. Perhaps Corel will either fix or enable
this in the shrinkwrap version.

Printer support for my HP Deskjet 600 equals that of Word 6.0. Printing
is fast and clean. I'm happy!

Anyone else notice in the help windows that if the scrollbar is clicked
and moved and then stopped without releasing the mouse button the text
jumps slightly? Not a major nit, but an interesting effect nonetheless.

Even though this is a port from the Windows world, Corel has clearly set
the standard by which other word processing efforts will be judged,
especially Free Software projects such as KWord and Maxwell.

To say I'm pleased is an understatement. Perhaps I'm in seventh
(eighth?) heaven now. At least the battle for the desktop just got a
lot more interesting. Well worth the 2.5 hr download @ 2.5 kbps.

Merry Christmas!
