Linux Bolstered By Middleware

Emerging middleware products should stoke the fires of Linux
adoption in the enterprise.

Until now, use of the open-source operating system has been
limited mostly to special projects. But enterprise-class
middleware--a prerequisite if large companies are to build
mission-critical applications on the open-source platform--is
laying the groundwork for mainstream applications.

Already, a slew of object request brokers (ORBs) for Linux
have appeared, following the major endorsements from IBM,
Oracle, Sybase Inc. and other database players earlier this
year.

Expected soon are Linux ports for middleware, including
application servers, transaction processing (TP) monitors,
enterprise messaging platforms and more, from vendors
ranging from IBM to BEA Systems Inc. to Netscape. By

Sendmail Goes Commercial

Sendmail Inc. this week will begin selling a commercial
version of its namesake mail router program, a key Internet
infrastructure product.

Sendmail, which according to a University of Illinois study is
used by nearly 80 percent of ISPs and a majority of Fortune
100 businesses, is a server-based message transfer agent that
distributes mail between the Internet and servers running e-
mail programs such as Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange.

When Sendmail creator Eric Allman incorporated his company
this past March, he vowed to deliver a commercial product by
the end of the year and to continue development of the open-
source software (OSS) version.

"In the commercial product, Sendmail Pro, we're adding ease-
of-use features and extra utilities to the base OSS code," said
Richard Guth, Sendmail's vice president of marketing. The
plan, he said, is to release at least one major OSS version
every year, followed by a new version of the commercial
product. By Ellis Booker
