I agree with you, John, for the most part. The difference, as I see it, is
that the currency we're dealing in *is* market share only. It's important
for the Open Source community to realize (again, IMHO) that without market
share we'll see the environment stagnate and die. The internet is viable,
to a large degree, because it's the world's biggest billboard. Without the
possiblility of getting their name on the lips of a large percentage of
computer users, software developers have to either charge for their product
or find greener pastures. Is this perception naive on my part? Like I
said, IMHO. :)

Also, I'm still too ignorant to get my system up and running with the
paperwork provided. Maybe it's just that I've loaded and reloaded, ad
nauseum, windoze of all flavors, but I don't have any trouble with the
loading process. Granted, if I had more time to devote to the learning
curve, I might be over this frustrating hump. My current problem is that
I've got a Linux environment that can't see the outside world, so is
useless. It's a good platform to work on my homework, but I have to
reenter the work again to ftp to school. I'm confident that the problem's
solution is only a higher IQ away, but I can't sacrifice my grades for the
health of the machine. All this ranting is to say that the installation is
hard because the people using the system are experienced enough to
understand the prompts (or are acquainted with someone who is) and there is
no reason to refine it further. If microsoft were to (heaven forbid)
produce a Linux version (aside from costing $1000) it would probably load
and run at the first startup because they are a profitable enterprise and
realize that market share equates to money so they make it useable. In a
year this probably won't be much of a sore point with me, but, excuse me,
it is now.

Enough griping for now. Everyone, just delete this before you read it --
oops. Too late. :)

Jeff

Just want to advise everybody of a few things...
It's an interesting paper, alternates between being incredibly
insightful and incredibly ignorant. It shows what lengths Microsoft
will go to in order to crush the competition.
However, I do not believe that it will have a significant effect on
the Open Source community since Open Source is not about market share,
but is instead about software quality.
It is a quite interesting read to see Microsoft's mistaken impressions
about how they can compete with Linux. In reality, they cannot.
