Hi All.

After the ball game this eve, I decided to channel surf over to ZDTV
(yeah, I know, eye candy for geek wanna bes ;) ), channel 273 on
DirecTV, and their lead story was the investment Intel, et. al. have put
into Red Hat. The first panelist, John Dodge of PC Week, came across a
bit bearish toward Linux and stated the usual FUD of difficult to
install and a lack of drivers, also saying that this investment was
probably driven as much by anti-Microsoft sentiment as anything Linux is
capable of accomplishing in its future.

Brett Glass of PC Reseller took the bullish side and did a good job
getting the word out about Linux's, and Free BSD's, speed, stability,
and popularity among ISPs. The Internet development model was breifly
mentioned as well. Brett then fell into a bit of a hype mode by trying
to say that Linux could be installed and nearly completely configured in
a matter of minutes over the Internet (perhaps with a cable modem :O ).

Dodge countered that Linux should probably only be considered by power
users. He then admitted he hadn't actually installed or used a Linux
system yet, but said he had a Red Hat 5.1 CD and was going to play with
it in the future.

John C. Dvorak, the show's moderator, closed the segment by recommending
that anyone wishing to install Linux or any second OS to look into
products like System Commander that manage booting multiple OSes.

Overall, I think this was positive PR for Linux and Free Software even
though 3 minutes seemed much too short, but it was the lead story!
Hopefully this will at least have the impact of "where have I seen Linux
mentioned before" on the typical ZDTV viewer when he hears of Linux in
the future. I think it's absolutely amazing the strides the Linux
Community has made just in 1998 alone. My thanks to all who work so
hard to make this system the success it is.
