OK, for the first, Linux supports dynamically-changeable resolutions.
Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-KeypadPlus a few times and watch what happens.
If you find something that you like, run your appropriate X setup
program and specify that resolution as the default.  XFree86 has
utilities XF86Seutp and xf86config for this purpose.

The second is caused by too few colors.  This can actually be caused
by running in too high a resolution, or take a look at what we've
discussed in the previous message to you.
