To change this, edit /etc/inittab. Look for the line that says
"initdefault" on it, and change the 3 to a 5.  Reboot or log in
as root somewhere and type "init 5", sit back and wait.

Yes.  It's in /etc/X11/XF86Config.  Use a configuration tool like
'xf86config' or Xsetup or Xconfigurator; it's been a while.
