I'd avoid taking the 497c in an 8 week format, depending on who's teaching it.  
The jerk who taught mine assigns programming type problems without the benefit 
of a lab period and he's normally unavilable for questions or any for of help.  
He also is inaccurate in his lectures to it required a major amount of outside 
research and trial and error.  Take the 16 week course unless you're in a major 
hurry because it will be your basis for all your UNIX.
