Yes, mutt would be able to open maildirs.

You have to choose whether you want to delete the duplicates from your
local store (in which case, point mutt to it) or from your IMAP server
(in which case, point your mutt there). In either case, then if
offlineimap is configured correctly, you can then run it to synchronize
the two stores. Only then open up Evolution.

I recommend running offlineimap before you begin, and then making a
backup copy of your local maildir. Also read a tutorial on mutt if
you've never used it before. You don't need to know much to use it for
this single task, but still it's a powerful tool and if you don't know
what you're doing it can be bewildering.
