I agree with Daniel - it's much cleaner to have it in the program, and if
it's configurable what's the problem? Otherwise you just get fractionation
of the program and people will get version mismatches more often...

  Hm, that didn't get very far.  Would you mind providing a reason?  For
myself,
I'll say that this is much cleaner than relying on proxies to authenticate
users.
